Memorial tat

Thought I'd share my new ink in progress...because of the size (and cost), I opted to get the outline done first, then will go back after it heals to get the color and shading done. It's a memorial tat for my friend Ellen, who passed away July 17, 2007, from complications stemming from spinal cancer. Pagans in the Philly area would know her as the woman who created the Broomcloset (http://www.broomcloset.org/), which is a wonderful website that helps network area pagans. Her favorite flower was the purple iris. The butterfly will be a monarch, and the kanji is "transformation."

TRIBAL TATTOOS: CULTURAL FAD & CULTURAL TRAVESTY!

TRIBAL TATTOOS: CULTURAL FAD & CULTURAL TRAVESTY!
(C) Wade MacMorrighan, 2007

Okay, we've all seen 'em...the ripped guys with a tribal armband tattood around their bicep! So far as tattoo as an expression of art nd consciousness goes (or lack there of, as I shall later go into) this one's been WAY over done!

Now, I'll be the first one to admit that if a sexy man with pecs of steel and arms with muscles ontop of his muscles walks into a room witha tribal tattoo there'd be something about it that would simply make him, shall we say, "more *appealing*"! But, that's one of the facets of tribal tattoos as an art--it's supposed to look goo on the body, and take into context the shape and natural lines of one's body; even accentuating them.

But, far too many men and women are thoughtlessly getting tattoos without understanding the significance of the ink they bear-- this very well may have the potential to bastardize a respective culture! I wouldn't be opposed of requiring tattoo artists to mandate that their prospective customers know what their are getting--if it's tribal, or froim some other culture-- and what it means, or each respective shape or line consciously reflect in the culture from which is stems.

This is why more folks ought to spend hours of time studying what they want, and how best to express it as a form of "sacred geomotry", if you will. Look to one's own culture, first, if there are any extent pagan/tribval motifs that have survived, and apply specific images and ifeograms in the make-up oif your tattoo, to best express what it is that the tribal tattoo is meant to signify! After all, tattoos often marked a rite de passage; it was a journey because it originally took many days, rather than hours, for ancient tattoos to be applied. But, I digress...

Lets say that, for the sake of argument, you are a Gay man (this is an original idea of my own) that you want a tribal tattoo as a symbol demarcating Gay Pride. What choices are there? Well, there's an inverted piunk triangle that our Nazi pursecutors demanded we wear. But, I would like a butterfly for a variety or reasons constructed out of a tribal motif. Now, the reasons for this is that the butterfly often represents liminality and transformation or fluidity from one state to another. It is also an obsolete sign for Gay Liberation: during the 1970s lavender butterflies were used as such symbols, but I have never seen any, or found this reference on-line. Red butterflies were also thought to be witches in early-modern Britain, as well as a symbol for the soul. Even in Spain a derogatory term for a Gay man [mariposa] translates as "butterfly".

However, the lines and motifs that yield the eventual tribal tattoo ought to reflect a deeper meaning and belief that incorporate various shapes and lines of significance. What should such a tattoo imply by way of the incorporated motif? Well, Pride and Courage, as well as Love, or incorporating symbols associated with Protection and Defense, for instance. But, instead of just leaching off of other disparate cultures with no connection [such as Native American meets Greek and pseudo-Celtic] choose some motifs from a culture that has significance to you--personally!

This, however, is my own personal philosophy. YMMV! Though, I pine for the days when a tribal tattoo actually MEANT something--we need more tribal customs within our own social networks or communities. Moreover, get an inspired tattoo to mark a relationship one might hav with a respective deity--I am ALL in favour of religious contemporary Pagan tattoos! Still...one fascet I desperately want to thoroughly investigate is the evidence for ancient tattoos from various cultures, particularly through Europe, and what they maight have looked like.

ISO Tattoo Ideogram Resources!

Hey guys, I am in the process of designing (more-or-less by culling visual expressions of an ideal) a personal tattoo for Gay Pride of next year, so...bare with me a min.! First off, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a selection of books with which one can research symbology and ideograms?

Now...what I have planned is a butterfly rendered in a tribal motif! But, because it bugs me to see other cultures getting leached off of or folks calling "tribal tattoos" "tribal" when they bare no meaning and is merely art, I want it to be repleat with meaning, containing shapes and symbols through the intersecting lines denoting such things as courage, or Pride, etc. (Of course, I will need to meditate on what "Gay Pride" means to me, make a list, and then look for symbols that both historically express that idea through a symbol, etc.) Sadly, none of my own book or extent resources have availed themselves to my necessity at the moment.

Although, the butterfly itself does bear significance: it represents beauty; was believed to be the soul in many cultures; while red butterflies were thought to be witches that have shape-shifted; and it's transformation represents liminality and transformation (it's the only creature known to be able to completely alter its DNA); and during the 1970s (though I have foud no surviving images and references to this) lavender butterflies were symbols of Gay Liberation; even in Spain a derrogative word for a gay man in *mariposa*, which means "butterfly"; I also think the butterfly may have been a symbol for Eros who was the especial Patron of same-sex desire in Greece. I was also thinking of having two black dots diametrically opposed incorporated into the motif to represent the balance of the posative and the negative; the light and dark; as well as the masculine and the feminine, etc. Often one will note relatively "meaningless" free-standing dots in neo-tribal tattoos, so I thought I would borrow from this and impune it with some *real* meaning!

So...I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas for source-references for symbols and ideograms, etc.? Sadly, I haven't been able to find much on-line, such as through Symbols.Com (my usualy "go to" source).
Tattoo Symbology & Ideology...

Hey guys, as I may have mentioned before I am in the process of culling various ideas for a butterfly tattoo on the left-side of my chest rendered in the neo-tribal style (though, it's gotta' have the sexy lines this particular style's so well known for--I was watching a programme on TV last night dealig with a tribal tattoo competition, and one tribal piece simply took my breath away!). However, I want it to have some very real meaning, besides just being the modern, meaningless, tribal motifs that are so popular. So...I'd like to have the lines that constitute the piece to hold various significant associations. Ya' know what I mean? For example, an ideogram incorporated that means "pride", "esteem" or "protection", "courage" and "strength", etc... Sadly, my usual "go to" site is fairly useless, proving to be pretty narrow: http://symbols.com But.........because I am astute (at least I think so, anyway!), I'm also interested in why a symbol means what it means, or from where it may have evolved. So, I was wondering if anyone might have know of any good resource-type books that are pretty thorough examinations of symbols, their traditional meanings and their evolutions, etc. Anyone know of any that'd be worth my while? As for my tatoo-idea in question, I'd like to keep any incorporated symbols within a Northern, European, etc. stream or "cultural" environment. Of course, one of these days I shall have to set down with pen and paper and write a list of "Key Words" detailing what Gay Pride means to me. (The reason I desire a butterfly is becayse it represents not only witches [who were thought to shape-shift into red butterflies], but the soul and liminality or transformation; however, in the 70s lavender butterflies were ideograms of Gay Liveration, and in Spain a derrogatory term for Gay men [mariposa] translates as "butterfly"--I know it's supposed to be derrogatory, but I still think it's pretty!) Of course, before I get this tattoo I really want to hit my local gymn--hard! Hey, it's cheaper than pec. implants! LOL...

Take Care,

Do you like to listen to music? Do you listen to any online radio stations? Or websites that stream music? Like Circle of Souls radio?
If you do any of the above, after May 15th you may not have that option thanks to a new royalty
rates being pushed by the recording industry.
From the website, www.savenetradio.org
"The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! The Internet Radio Equality Act has just been introduced by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL ) to save the Internet radio industry. Please call your congressperson to ask them to co-sponsor this bill by clicking below."

If you value choice and music in this country, please respond today to this serious issue.

Hi everyone. Just joining this tribe and wanted to say hey. I live in Portland Oregon and have a small custom tattoo studio. I have been tattooing 9 years and do a wide variety of styles and custom proects. I like to meet for coffee or food first and show my portfolio, get to know one another before we begin working. I am actively involved in fairy, pagan, and native spirituality circles and am available for ritual tattooing.
I also travel the west coast frequently. (other places less so as flying becomes more stressful, expensive, and difficult)

Two Piercing Ordeal Rituals this October

This October, the Sacred Mark Sanctuary is offering two piercing ordeal
rituals in the Norse tradition:

ODIN’S ORDEAL: A NORSE TRACK
Mythical Journeys, an event of the Free Spirit Alliance
October 12-15, Darlington, MD
http://www.freespiritgathering.org/fallevent/odin.html

The Havamal teaches us that Odin discovered the runes as a form of
communication and divinatory wisdom by suffering the ordeal of hanging
from Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Odin crossed the boundary between the nine
worlds to gain this knowledge. Perhaps you, too, feel the need to undergo
an ordeal experience (crossing the axis mundi) in order to have shamanic
wisdom revealed to you.

Those that choose the path of Odin's Ordeal will be cloistered together,
respecting the way of the Norse by living by some of their rules and
traditions. Piercing, energy pulls, and suspension are all a possible
part of this experience, but they are not the only way through which you
may face your ordeal.

Registration costs increase on September 1st, so REGISTER TODAY for
Mythical Journeys at
http://www.freespiritgathering.org/fallevent/index.html.

PIERCING THE VEIL
October 29, Frederick, MD

During the time of Samhain, the veil between worlds becomes thin, allowing
us to pierce the veil of our waking perceptions, honoring our Ancestors
and the gifts they have given us, and exploring the nine worlds.

Pierce the Veil using ritual body piercing, drumming, and dancing; seek to
perceive beyond your five senses; honor your body, your spirit, and your
connection with those who have walked this path long before. Bring an
open mind and a sense of adventure…and wait for the possibilities to open
to you.

Details and registration information for Piercing the Veil are coming
soon. Keep watching this forum or contact Kelly@sacredmarks.com for more
information.

We hope to see you this autumn!

Brightest Blessings,
Sacred Mark Sanctuary

Getting my new tattoo (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/37147973/) was no easy feat. But this of course is very typical of Ma & Shiva. I should've known some sort of test/initiation would be involved where they are involved. But, in the end everything turned out fine, also typical of these deities. I passed the initiation, even if it cost me a friendship. Gains & losses. This is what they teach. Attachments are ok if you can learn from them, & becomming unattached is the goal when the time has come to move on. I was fearful, I went thru much pain, & I came out the other side with a badge that will be there forever. Just another trip thru the Underworld.

Greetings!
I'm PdxDruid. I want to invite you all to a really awesome 3D chat
messenger. I have alot of Pagan friends there & been drawing many
from other areas on the Net to there. I'm hoping to create a really
strong Pagan presence there. When you join through my link you will
automatically be added to my Buddy list. This will help you find other
Pagans here as almost every single person in my Buddy list is Pagan of one
flavor or another. Heres a run down of how to earn credits here to buy stuff.
When you join they start you off with a 1,000 credits (Credits is our virtual currency).
The main ways to earn credits is to invite folks. When someone first accepts
a invite from you, you earn 500 credits then another 500 credits when they have their
first chat. They give you credit when they hit their 5th chat and others too
but I haven't kept up on how many. LOL Anyway if they buy their name ($7.95)
you get 2,500 credits. NOTE: You don't need to buy your name if you don't want to.
If you don't then you just end up stuck with the word Guest in front of your name.
Alot of folks have guest in front of their name & been here since the beginning.
Also Guest have little ads on there homepage. No biggy. The benefits of buying
your name is it drops the Guest from name, drops the ads from your homepage.
Allows you to download the Developer program & become a
Developer and design & sell clothes & other stuff in the catalog and
a few other things I haven't really learned yet. But mainly unless you
want to be a Developer you don't need to buy your name unless you don't
like Guest in front of your name. One of my friends I invited husband
bought her the full adult access pass & I got 10,000 credits. Adult
Access allows you to buy adult mature stuff like nudity skins and stuff.
So unless you like doing rituals online Skyclad or (LOL) a real flirt
you don't need it. LOL You can buy credits but unless you are loaded
why bother? You can earn plenty just by inviting folks and its a great
way to make friends as well. Speaking of Rituals online. No one is
doing this yet here & one of my good friends is a Developer & I'm
learning to be a Developer. Me & her are working on creating ritual
scenes/themes so folks can do ritual online. Great for those who are
in secluded places or don't have other Pagans in their area to work
with and like to even if it is online, experience ritual with others.
I have a Stonehenge Theme that has a Ritual/council like lodge & hold
little workshop discussions within it. Its a great little lodge to do
Druidic 101 or Wicca 101 classes in also. I also have a Redwoods Theme
and I just did a cyber handfasting in it for 2 and that was kinda cool.
Their Avatars were all dressed up for it & mine wore its celtic robe
and deer antlers on his head (This avatar is temporarly down and I'm
using my PdxDruid one). LOL There are alot of cool Pagan themes
already but they are mainly Pagan social themes. Like the Wiccan
Retreat Cafe & the Goddess Cabin. 2 of my favorite. The first time I
chat with you its in the Cafe. The Cafe can seat like 12 people so its
kinda cool though its still in Beta and can usually only get 3 avatars
to appear in it though I did have up to 7 Avatars in there once. They
are busy working out the kinks though and many I have invited love it
enough they willing to deal with the little quirks. LOL Anyway when
you join and I'm on I spend my first chat with you teaching you how
to control your Avatar and to get to know you then set you loose to
have fun and explore. If I'm not online when you join just click Chat
now & someone will pop up and help you. If you get a newbie learn what
you can then say thank you and try Chat now again till you get someone
whose gotten good at it.
You can also click my homepage in your Buddy list & there you will
fine my buddy list and it will show you who is online (this is great
if you perfer to have a fellow Pagan help you rather than a random
person in the Chat now mode). Click their pict then it will take you
to their page. You can leave a message (If its a question make them
private so their page don't get flooded with questions) or click there
homepage pict & it will launch a chat with them. Let them know I
invited you & they will help you learn how to use your Avatar. Once
you learn to use your Avatar start inviting your Pagan Friends and
earn shopping credits & have fun. Hope to see you there! Below is the
link. http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_registration.php?userId=1547889

go na Tiarna agus Bantiarn coill glas beannacht glas tu!<br>

Hello, Everyone! I just joined this tribe..

I have a Native American style conch with red tail hawk feathers on my right thigh. The red tail hawk is one of my totems.

The black rose on my left breast is a memorial. It's a black rose (signifying death) with blue wings (freedom for the soul), green leaves (to symbolize eternity- because they are forever green), and 3 twinkles for the 3 years we were together before he died.

The tat on my left wrist is for my children. 4 blue roses with green leaves. Blue roses are unique and one of a kind, as are each of my children. They are all the same size and shape because I love them all equally. The green leaves signify eternity. It's on the left wrist because the left vein leads directly to the heart. And the snake encircling my wrist is for protection for me and the children. ("Children" who are grown and have children of their own now!)

I am looking into getting another tat, but I'm not sure of the design yet. The one I drew for my youngest daughter is a picture of the Greek Theater masks... Smile now, cry later. She has it tattooed between her shoulder blades. I figured as her mother, that I had the right to draw and design her first tattoo. She agreed and I am honored that she is wearing my art work on her body. (She is 24, by the way).

Tattoos cover up or revelation?

I posted this on another tattoo tribe and thought I would post here as well.

I was just reading on another tribe and a woman made a statement that she felt each tattoo revealed more about her self than covered up (her skin, I am assuming..)

How do you feel about that? I kinda felt like a light went off in my head. My tattoos mean something to me, and I chose them because of that reason. I have more ink ideas in the works and find that I am using them as a way to express myself or my inner self.

anybody else?

Hello, I am new to this Tribe, but have been on tribe for over a month now. It does not appear that this tribe has been very active as of late.

I am looking for art to inspire / incorporate into a back piece that I have been conceptually working on for the past 10 years. I believe I am finally ready to begin the work and need to get some good artwork to begin showing some artists.

Does anyone have any ideas about sites / books / artists to look to for Pagan imagery? I am particularly looking for celtic imagery, shamanic imagery (bear, wolf, and lizard).

here's a question for those here classically educated ;) - anyone know what "Omnia una Divum est" means? Does it mean what I think it means - i.e. (roughly) "everything is one and Divine"...?

Arabic and Sanskrit Calligraphy for tat's . . . .

I'm looking for someone who can either do arabic and sanskrit calligraphy, or point me in the direction of someone or a website. I'm planning on getting the fem. form of "dancer" in Arabic and I'd like to get "sat nam" in Sanskrit. I have a step brother-in-law who's Arabic and he wrote it for me, but he doesn't do the nice calligraphy and I haven't found any fonts that I like. I'm having a *real* hard time finding the Sanskrit, though. At this point I'm willing to pay to have someone do it--I can get the tat's done at any time 'cause my fiance's an artist. It's just a matter of getting the calligraphy.

So if someone could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Please message me, if you have info.

Thanks!
tatt journey quests

has anyone taken a tattoo induced journey/vision quest?

I was studying primitive trance vision when I came across the Innuit native American method of tattooing
it uses a needle and thread---the thread is dipped in soot ink and drawn through the skin
it is a very powerful method of pain induced visioning

I have been working on my Innuit tatt for about a year on and off---I can only do up to about 10" of single line tatt before the pain is too much and I trance

it is very worth trying :D

Damh the Bard is a Druid whose spirituality is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and Pagan anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. Leaving academia to those better qualified, Damh works within that world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. So relax, and let the music and words take you there.

Come check out the mp3's, if you like join the Tribe.

I have never been to a convention and I was wondering if it is worth doing. I *love* the flash they've done for the logo and wouldn't mind having it on a t-shirt. It might be worth it just for that if they have them. *laugh*

Has anyone else actually used tattooing as part of magical workings or to lead towards transitions, e.g. tattooing fire on you to make up for a lack of fire in yourself, your life, or proserity symbols to bring in money, etc?

I've noticed this trend and would love to speak to others who've done it...

(I feel wierd about posting my tats, they're so... personal, but I'll try to get some pictures, or at very least describe them later...)

Hey, new here. I live in Olympia, WA.

I'm 32 years old, mother and wife. I am an eclectic pagan with leanings toward Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Kemetic, and Celtic...with a deep interest in Neolithic Shamanism.

Told you I was eclectic. =)

Anyway, I posted some of my tats in my photo album on my profile. I have a few more in the works, mostly design stage...as hubby and I have an agreement. We alternate who gets the new tattoo. It's his turn right now, so he has one getting done. Next turn is mine!

Addicted to the ink. Yes. Indeed.

In any case...

i posted a shot of the la tene spirals tattoo, designed by pat fish, that i have on my right ankle in the tribe's album. i got the tattoo last samhain to mark the death of my marriage, and to remind myself that through the pain of transition comes beauty. i've got a special fondness for celtic spirals.

there's a lot of beautiful work in the album! :)

I put up the black outline of the tatt I'm currently working on. I will try and get pix of the rest of my art. The flaming roses were supposed to be the bed from which a phoenix springs... but I'm getting worried about going on up the spine since this one has hurt so much. Full back guys, what was your experience... is the upper back as bad as the lower back?

Hello, I currently have 4 tattoos, all of which can be easily covered up at school, work, etc etc. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on getting a tat...say on the back of the wrist or behind the ear. Has anyone experienced any kind of discrimination in the work place, school, etc. because of visible tats?

I have a tattoo on the back of my neck that I have never really been happy with. It is a quarter moon cradling a full moon. When some people see it they say, "oh! the moon and the earth cool!" I'm all for people's own interpretations, but I also want my tattoos to be able to express their meaning. So when two heavenly bodies are being confused that doesn't suit me. To me it represents spiritual growth, the waxing of the moon in a sense, even though the crescent is below instead of beside the moon. So I have decided to change the crescent into a chalice. I think it would make a lot more sense that way. And here is my question....Do any of you know of any pagan or celtic chalice designs? Is there a good web site with pagan and celtic designs...I would love input on this. Thanks

Just wondering if anyone is planning on coming down to the Mantra Convention this year (4th + 5th Sept - info and tickets: http://www.mantratattoo.com/news/ )?

Mantra really is an excellent festival (and I ain't just saying that cos it's my home town <grin>) - and I highly recommend coming for the entire weekend!

Unfortunately, Geoff and I have got "family commitments" that weekend, so we're probably only going to get there for the Sunday afternoon - if you (or anyone else on the list) see us there, please say a warm "hi!" and introduce yourselves - it would be great to compare ink face-to-face!

Introduction

MM,
Just wanted to say hello. And to add that my profile picture is a tattoo I received as a ritual tattoo. It was done by a friend of mine named Graham. His studio is 8th Day Tattoo in Jacksonville, Fl.
It took me 4 years to get up enough courage to have the Triple Goddess Symbol placed on my body ( I don't know why but I had this fear of placing such a powerful symbol on my person-It wasn't until I had a vision from the Goddess Diana herself that I just simply did it). I can tell everyone here, that it was the most enlightening experience I have ever had. Notice the colors were placed in the points of the pentacle to correspond with the elements...This tattoo opened up windows I never thought imaginable or possible. Today... I just look back and say to myself, "Why the Hell did you wait so Damn long Tawny". LOL
Sorry to be so long-winded. I am just so excited to be in this Tribe.
BB, Tawny

Ink Addiction

What is it about tatts that make you want more and more? You know what I mean...you get that first one and you adore it and before you know it you're saving up for the next, and the next, and the next.

Is it just me? Tattooing is very addictive for me.

And it's not just the tattoo - it's the process. The creation (if it's a custom piece), the prepping, the time dealing with the pain and the symbolic bloodshed. The pain and bloodshed are a trial by fire. It's your sacrifice to the art, what you offer for the privilege of possessing it.

After a long session, I feel a sense of luscious languidness. I'm exhausted physically and emotionally afterward. Drained almost. It's extremely pleasant. It's the same kind of feeling you have after a long bout of great, mind blowing sex. ;-)

So I'm curious - how does the tattooing process affect you?

I've got a raven knotworky thing at the base of my spine for protection (the Morrighan and, in my way of thinking, kinda Odin and the raven itself and whatever-- dark knowledge, etc.)... and a tribal-y thing inspired by part of the tattoo used in the cover art for Kushiel's Chosen. It's a fictional book about a pagan woman who's charged with two missions, one from each of her patron deities. She's bound to find pleasure in pain and submission thru Kushiel and bound to offer herself where necessary for the pleasure of herself and others and to help those in need thru Namaah. It's really interesting how the author of the trilogy reworks existing mythos into her novels and kinda changes things up a bit. There's a version of the Christ tale in there and all kinds of stuff. Anyway. I can add to the tribe album if anyone would like, otherwise my pix are in my album.
The Joys of Ritual Tattooing

Tattooing in general is a ritual act, but if you have the opportunity, you might consider taking it a step further.

I’ve done a LOT of “Pagan tattoos” in the last 20 years for customers and friends, and the one thing that seems to be constant in these customers is a need for ritual- a sense of the loss of Rite of Passage in our culture. Sure, they identify in their own ways with the artwork itself, but once word began to travel that I was a ‘Pagan tattooer’, I began to have customers come to me for more than just a tattoo, even if, more often than not, they were unable to articulate it as such.

For me, the image content is secondary to (but inseparable from) the fact of the tattoo ritual which, for millennia, was one for which the Seeker would attend the Shaman or medicine man (or woman) for a ritual of transformation- typically from one stage of life to another, or to mark a passage into a new status in the tribe. It is an intimate ritual, as well as one of the remaining rites of passage left to us as a population at large that leaves visual evidence of having participated.

Pagan/ritual tattooing for me has often included reproducing Paleolithic/aboriginal images while sitting on a tatami mat in the middle of an ancient redwood circle. (One where a giant redwood would have fallen down a thousand years ago, and had little sprigs that grew around it’s base, grow up to being giants themselves, leaving an empty circle in the middle, sometimes 20 feet across, with the surrounding trees being up to 8 feet across). Having prepared the space though ritual, and thanked the spirits of the place, we’d prepare ourselves through meditation and ritual. The tattoo itself becomes the exclamation point, making permanent the intent of these rituals, as it leaves its permanent image to remind us, as well as having its own animistic value.

Most Pagans I’ve known are animists (believing that things/places/animals have spiritual value or spirits of their own, and that things used/created with sacred intent, themselves become sacred/imbued with spirit/power) and through such ritual tattooing, we can formalize these transformations/passages into a new stage/etc. Through making permanent the intent involved in the ritual, we make permanent the passage/transformation.

I've used prehistoric methods and tools (picking with thorn/bone/horn/shell, or comb & mallet), as well as using modern electric machines, powered by a battery pack smaller than a box of Kleenex. This ritual tattooing has the added benefit of getting us in closer touch with those who have gone before us, while creating sacred art in sacred space. All these tools are treated with ritual respect and care, even when discarded if disposable, or stored for future use if they can be sterilized in an autoclave.

We can only be true to our selves, our beliefs, our self-image, and our own realities. My Paganism is based on life experience that I can not deny. I know what these images and rituals represent for me, and what I see/feel/know regarding my friends who I tattoo in these circumstances. I will ALWAYS consider myself fortunate to have been a part of so much creation of sacred art, sacred ritual, and sacred space.

Just my two cents.

S

Do you think gods & goddesses, fairies, magical/mythical beasts, or something else? What speaks to you and makes you say "Damn, I need to get some more ink!" (or maybe, "Wish I had some free skin to put THAT on...")

Is there anything in particular that inspires you?
